Gretna……….Howard Lee Mattox, age 91 of Gretna died Monday, March 23, 2015 at his residence.
Born May 19, 1923 in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of the late Waddie Lee Mattox and Mary Love Oakes Mattox. He was predeceased by three grandchildren, Rachel Wood, Stephanie Wood and Michelle Wood; and two sisters, Dare M. Reynolds and Rebecca M. Cook. Mr. Mattox was a member of West End Church of Christ and was a Navy Veteran of World War II. He retired from Klopman and was a farmer. Mr. Mattox enjoyed building, and watching baseball games and the Price is Right on television.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Virginia Rigney Mattox of the residence; one son, Joseph Howard Mattox of Gretna; five daughters, Candace Wood and her husband, Dale of Charlottesville, Cynthia Arthur and her husband, Jim of Kenbridge, Pamela Winston and her husband, Nelson of Brookneal, Ellen Adams and her husband, Leroy of Gretna and Sharon Gumbs and her husband, Rick of Bumpass; four grandchildren, Andrew Wood, Charlotte W. Archer, Sarah M. Johnson and Emily A. Williamson; and eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Thursday, March 26, 2015 at West End Church of Christ by Randy Parker, Minister. Burial with Military Honors by the U.S. Navy Honor Guard will follow in Gretna Burial Park.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, March 25, 2015 at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home and other times will be at the residence.
