Henry Bennett, Sr.'s Obituary
Gretna...........Richard Henry Bennett, Sr. age 87 of 8053 Climax Road, Gretna died Monday, April 18, 2011 at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Bennett was born in Gretna, VA on February 14, 1924, the son of the late Anna Keatts Bennett and Chesley Bennett. He was predeceased by his wife, Frances Barnes Bennett; and a sister, Gladys B. Rowles. Mr. Bennett lived all his life on Climax Road. He worked in Gretna as a mechanic in his early years, later taking over the family tobacco farm. After retiring from farming, he worked for Custer Ice Service helping deliver ice for seventeen years until age seventy. After retirement, he remained very active. He especially enjoyed riding his bicycle with his friend and neighbor, Tom Yeatts. They could be seen riding together on late evenings in the warm summer and fall months. Mr. Bennett was a member of Siloam United Methodist Church.
Mr. Bennett is survived by a son Richard H. Bennett, Jr. and his wife, Rosemary of Danville; a daughter, Virginia (Jenny) B. Webb and her husband, Dave of Gretna; three grandchildren, Nicholas D. Webb and his wife, Ashleigh of Atlanta, GA, Adam J. Bennett of Danville, and Kathryn (Katie) C. Bennett of Danville; and a great-grandchild, Britney Bennett. He also leaves behind someone very special in his life who he treated just like a son, Walter D. Osborne.
Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, April 20, 2011 at Colbert-Moran Chapel by Pastor George Schaefer and Pastor Doug Barber. Burial will follow in Oak Grove Christian Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 P.M. Tuesday, April 19, 2011 at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home, and other times will be at the residence of his daughter and son-in-law, Virginia (Jenny) and Dave Webb, 8125 Climax Road, Gretna.
The family suggest memorials be made to Climax Volunteer Fire/Rescue Department, 1876 Cooksburg Road, Chatham, VA 24531, or to Siloam United Methodist Church, 8125 Climax Road, Gretna, VA 24557.
Colbert-Moran Funeral Home, Gretna is in charge of arrangements.
