Gretna……..Gerald Alvin Doss, age 74 of Gretna died Saturday, August 30, 2025 at his residence.

Born February 6, 1951 in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of the late George Washington Doss, Jr. and Goldie Dawson Doss. He was predeceased by a daughter, Marie Lanette Doss. Gerald was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Gretna Branch, retired from Abbott and was a veteran of the United States Army.

At work, Gerald was affectionately known as "Squirrel." He had a love for bluegrass music and enjoyed dancing. A peaceful man, he was also quick to react to situations and had a keen, observant nature. Very few could ever tease him or get one over on him. Though he rarely spoke a lot, when he did, his words carried weight and truth – what his wife, Darlene fondly described as "the gospel." Gerald loved his family deeply, was a skilled handyman, and had a natural mechanical ability. He was also known as a good storyteller, a dependable chauffeur, and someone whose quiet strength left a lasting impression on all who knew him.

He is survived by his wife, Darlene Sue Keen Doss of Gretna; one son, Tracy Melvin Doss of Gretna; one daughter, Dana Susan Doss of Gretna; one sister, Theresa McCormick of Evington; one niece, Susan Jerina; and two great-nieces, Elizabeth Jerina and Maryanne Jerina.

Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, September 2, 2025 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Gretna Branch by Branch President John Ansted. Burial with military honors by American Legion Altavista Post 36 and Gretna Post 232 will follow in the Rowland Family Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. Monday, September 1, 2025 at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home and other times will be at the residence.
