Axton…..George Ellis Oakes, age 91 of Axton, died Thursday, December 22, 2011 at Chatham Health and Rehab Center.
Born June 6, 1920 in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of the late Wade Hampton Oakes and Minnie Smith Oakes. He was predeceased by his first wife, Mary Burch Oakes, one brother, Henry Calvin Oakes; and two sisters, Catherine Shelton, and Claire Bartlett. Mr. Oakes was a member of County Line Christian Church, and a former Elder and Deacon at County Line Christian Church. He was a former member and Deacon at Museville Christian Church. Mr. Oakes was a retired farm manager for the city of Martinsville, and former President of the Young Farmers at Climax. He also was a former member of the Masonic Lodge 24.
He is survived by his wife, Helen G. Oakes of the residence; two sons, Marvin Oakes and wife, Mary of Gretna, and Donnie Oakes and wife, Dottie of Morgantown, WV; one daughter, Jeanette Barbour and her husband, Haywood of Hurt; two step-children, Claiborne Garrett and his wife, Phyllis of Dry Fork, and Rebecca Andrews and her husband, Frank of Danville; two sisters, Joyce Crocker of Danville, and Mildred Reynolds of Callands; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, December 27, 2011 at County Line Christian Church by Dean Ashby, Minister, and Steve Hayes, Minister. Burial will follow in Roselawn Burial Park.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 10 to 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, December 27, 2011 at County Line Christian Church, and other times will be at the residence of his son, Marvin Oakes, 10576 Chalk Level Road, Gretna.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the County Line Christian Church Building Fund, 12711 Chatham Road, Axton, VA 24054.
