Hurt……….George Dewey Mayhew, Jr., age 90 of Hurt died Monday, January 11 2016 at Gretna Health & Rehab Center.
Born October 31, 1925 in Pittsylvania County he was a son of the late George Dewey Mayhew, Sr. and Alice McGhee Mayhew. He was predeceased by his wife, Bernell Johnson Mayhew; a daughter, Janet Carol Mayhew and two brothers, Donald Mayhew and Darrell Mayhew. Mr. Mayhew was a retired supervisor with Burlington Industries and was an Army Veteran of World War II. He enjoyed woodworking, gardening, bird hunting, golfing and spending time with his family.
He is survived by a daughter, Kim Waller and her husband, Gene of Altavista; one grandson, Chad Hogan of Gretna; two brothers, Forest Mayhew of Gretna and Tommy Mayhew of Pawleys Island, SC; two sisters, Ruby Pickral of Gretna and Marjorie Shelton of Greensboro, NC.
Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, January 13, 2016 at Zion United Methodist Church by Pastor David Edinger and Rev. Harold Thornton. Burial with Military Honors by American Legion Altavista Post 36 and Gretna Post 232 will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, January 12, 2016 at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home and other times will be at the residence.
