Chatham………George "Larry" Coates, age 90 of Chatham died Wednesday, November 6, 2024 at Sovah Health Danville Memorial Hospital.

Born March 29, 1934 in Crewe, Virginia, he was a son of the late George Lattie Coates and Flonia Richardson Coates.  He was predeceased by his wife, Patty Sue Atkins Coates; one grandson, Alan LaRay Coates; one sister, Georgia Lee Coates Rasnake; and one brother, William "Bill" Lattie Coates.  Larry was a U.S. Army Veteran having spent 18 months in Germany setting up communications.  He was the owner/operator of a construction company and a former corrections officer for the state of Virginia.  Mr. Coates was member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints Gretna Branch.  He loved building and working with his hands.

He is survived by one daughter, Amanda Elliott and husband Raymond of Gladys; three sons, Steven A. Coates and wife, Vicki of Rock Hill, SC, Larry "Stuart" Coates and wife, Jewel of Danville and Christopher "Scott" Coates of Chatham; 6 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be conducted 1:00 p.m. Friday, November 15, 2024 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints Gretna Branch by Branch President, John Ansted and Raymond Elliott, Second Counselor.
