Garland (Bud) Lee Atkinson
Hurt……….Garland (Bud) Lee Atkinson, age 85 of 8181 Blue Ridge Drive, Hurt died Wednesday, May 21, 2014.
Born February 25, 1929 in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of the late, George William McClinton Atkinson and Minor Susan Pierce Atkinson. He was predeceased by a son, Michael Wayne Atkinson, four brothers and four sisters. Bud was a member of New Prospect Baptist Church and was a US Army veteran of World War II. He was the owner of G.L. Atkinson Construction. Mr. Atkinson enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating, bowling, cooking and working with his bird dogs.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Doris Chumley Atkinson of the residence; one daughter, Jeanne Pickerel and husband, David of Cashiers, NC; three grandchildren, Brian Atkinson and wife, Jennifer, Brandon Atkinson and wife, Jennie, and Ashley Pickerel Thomas and husband, A.J.; four great-grandchildren, Cooper Atkinson, Cohen Atkinson, Calden Atkinson and Vivianne Atkinson; and a daughter-in-law, Brenda Michaels.
Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Friday, May 23, 2014 at New Prospect Baptist Church by Rev. Brady Willis and Rev. C.W. Thompson. Burial with military honors by the Virginia National Guard Honor Guard will follow in the Chumley Family Cemetery.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service 1 to 2 p.m. Friday, May 23, 2014 at New Prospect Baptist Church and other times will be at the residence.
