Obituary

Pittsville…..Guy Thomas Jefferson, age 71 of Pittsville died Wednesday, May 7, 2014 at Gretna Health and Rehab Center after a brief illness.
Born November 13, 1942 he was the son of the late Guy Powell Jefferson and Katherlene Dove Jefferson. He grew up in the Pittsville area and graduated from Climax High School. He was a graduate of Ferrum Junior College as well as Lynchburg College where he received his B.S. and M.Ed. Degree. Tom was a member of Anderson Memorial United Methodist and Siloam United Methodist Church and was a veteran of the Virginia National Guard. He was employed by Pittsylvania County Schools for 36 years where he served as a teacher and coach. Later in his career he became principal of Renan Elementary School, Gretna Elementary School, and John L. Hurt Elementary School. Tom enjoyed all sports, but especially the New York Yankees, the Washington Redskins, and UVA baseball. He liked to garden and enjoyed taking care of the animals he rescued. Two of his favorite pastimes were to visit the local country store and trout fishing with friends. The greatest joy of his life, however, was his children and grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Rita Keith Jefferson of the residence; one son, Michael Guy Jefferson; one daughter, Kathryn Jefferson Cook and her husband, Ben; two grandchildren, Lauryn Helen Cook, and Landon Thomas Cook; and one sister, Vickie Jefferson Wright and her husband, Jeff.
Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Saturday, May 10, 2014 at Anderson Memorial United Methodist Church by Rev. John Snyder and Rev. George Hatmaker. Burial will follow in the Carl O. Moran Memorial Garden.
The family will receive friends 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, May 9, 2014 at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home and other times will be at the residence.
