Altavista……….Frances Belle Haymes Updike, age 94 of Altavista formerly of Gretna died Tuesday, February 26, 2013 at Autumn Care Nursing and Rehab.
Born January 6, 1919 in Pittsylvania County she was a daughter of the late Augusta Lee Haymes, Sr. and Sally Kate Haymes. She was married to the late Herbert Norman Updike for 58 years. Mrs. Updike was also predeceased by a son, Roger D. Updike; two brothers, A. L. Haymes and Wesley Haymes; and four sisters, Ann Marshall, Sally Cook, Elizabeth Yeatts, and Bobbie Midkiff.
She worked 10 years for Black and Bess and 25 years for Gretna Drug. She retired from Gretna Drug to care for her ailing husband. When he passed in 1994 she started sitting with others. Always a very caring, giving person; Mrs. Updike was loved by everyone that knew her. The oldest living member of Greenfield Baptist Church, she was always very active in church life including being a member of the church choir and the WMU.
She is survived by a daughter, Pat Connor and her husband, C.T. of Gretna; four grandchildren, Carmen Hollman, Sherri Connor, Cristy Henderson, and Norman Updike; 7 great-grandchildren; and 3 great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Friday, March 1, 2013 at Greenfield Baptist Church by Rev. R. G. Rowland. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence of her daughter and son-in-law, Pat & C.T. Connor, 3301 Rockford School Road, Gretna.
