Hurt…….Fleecie Short Atkinson Bruce, age 91, of Hurt died Friday, February 25, 2011 at Virginia Baptist Hospital in Lynchburg.
Born June 14, 1919 in Pittsylvania County she was a daughter of the late John William Short and Bessie White Farthing Short. Mrs. Bruce was married to William Thomas Atkinson for 48 years until his death in 1984 and then later to Walter "W.C." Bruce for ten years until his death. She was also predeceased by six brothers, a sister, and a grandson, Willie Atkinson. Mrs. Bruce was a homemaker and seamstress all her life and worked for ten years at Klopman Mills Sewing Division. She enjoyed sewing and was a member of the First Pentecostal Holiness Church of Altavista.
She is survived by her four children and spouses, Frances Vaughn (Doug) of Blanch, NC, Alvin Atkinson (Jean) of Hurt, John "Billy" Atkinson (Pat) of Gretna, and Karen Dee (Tim) of Blanch, NC; two half brothers, Roger Short of Ringgold, and Edgar Short of Ringgold; 7 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 A.M. Monday, February 28, 2011 at Colbert-Moran Chapel by Rev. Mark Hopkins and Rev. Tim Lane. Burial will follow in the Carl O. Moran Memorial Garden.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday, February 27, 2011 at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home and other times will be at the residence of her son and daughter-in-law, John "Billy" and Pat Atkinson, 1001 Gallows Road, Gretna.
The family suggests memorials be made to Hospice of the Hills, 3300 Rivermont Ave., Lynchburg, VA 24503.
