Gretna……….Ethel Bryant Hedrick, age 101 of Gretna died Monday, January 9, 2012 in Rocky Mount.
Born May 19, 1910 in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of the late Robert Lee Bryant and Rosa Peters Bryant. She was also predeceased by her husband, William Hedrick; her step-mother, Sally Bolling Bryant; one brother, Lloyd Bryant; and two sisters, Hilda Towler, and Ruby Cocke. Mrs. Hedrick received her education from Pittsylvania County Schools, Lynchburg College, and Madison College. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Gretna, keeping the nursery for over 30 years, and retired from Pittsylvania County Schools where she taught third grade. Mrs. Hedrick was a long time member and past Worthy Matron of the Gretna Chapter #118 Order of the Eastern Star.
She is survived by three sons, Lowell W. Hedrick of Mint Hill, NC, Robert L. Hedrick and his wife, Ruth of Gretna, and Vergil K. Hedrick and his wife, Leslie of Conyers, GA; one sister, Mary B. Toler of Chatham; seven grandchildren, Bill Hedrick, Phillip Hedrick, Elizabeth Simpson, Jacob Hedrick, Bryant Hedrick, Caroline Chambers, and Casey Hedrick; and eleven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 P.M. Saturday, January 14, 2012 at the First Baptist Church of Gretna by Rev. Jonathan Hilliard. Burial will follow in Gretna Burial Park.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 1 to 2:00 P.M. Saturday, January 14, 2012 at the First Baptist Church of Gretna Fellowship Hall and other times will be at the residence of her son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Ruth Hedrick, 1585 Lotus Drive, Gretna.
The family would like to express their appreciation to all the care givers that have assisted her. Special thanks go to Lynn Wood and Helen Cooper.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Gretna Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 14, Gretna, VA 24557, or to the First Baptist Church of Gretna, P.O. Box 339, Gretna, VA 24557.
