Emma Jean Nuckols Johnson

Gretna…….Emma Jean Nuckols Johnson, of Gretna, Virginia, passed away at Gretna Health & Rehabilitation Center after a short illness on February 24, 2017. She was 88 years old.
Emma Jean was born on May 20, 1928, in Chatham to the late Kirby C. Nuckols and Christine Oakes Nuckols. She was also preceded in death by her son, Milton Lee Johnson of Gretna; her sister, Velma Dean Nuckols Burris of Chatham; and her brother, Kirby Vaden Nuckols of Lynchburg.
Mrs. Johnson graduated from Chatham High School and Phillips Business College. She was a hard working person who loved to cook for her family, her friends, and her communities. Emma Jean was active in many service organizations. She supported education in agriculture in many ways, including her support of the Virginia Agriculture in the Classroom program and the Pittsylvania County Farm Bureau Women's Committee. Locally, Emma Jean was a faithful member of St. Andrews United Methodist Church, where she served in many roles, such as a Sunday School teacher and as the United Methodist Women's President and Secretary-Treasurer. Emma Jean loved and vigorously supported the Crafty Ladies.
Emma Jean is survived by her husband of 55 years, William P. (Billy) Johnson of Gretna; her children, William P. Johnson II and his wife, Jo Ellen of Fincastle and Martha Ann Moore and her husband, Curtis of Mineral; her three grandchildren, Elizabeth Christine Moore, Victoria Ann Moore, and William Posye Johnson III; her brother, Jesse Thomas (J.T.) Nuckols of Danville, extended family members, and many people that she simply considered family.
Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Monday, February 27, 2017 at St. Andrews United Methodist Church by Rev. Kyle Uselton and Rev. Jason Andrews. Burial will follow in Gretna Burial Park.
The family will receive friends from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Sunday, February 26, 2017 at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, please direct donations to St. Andrews UMC Building Fund, Virginia Foundation for Agriculture in the Classroom, the local fire departments and rescue squads, or a worthy charity or community service organization of your choice.
