Gretna………Edwin Thomas "Tommy" Merricks, age 78 of Gretna passed away peacefully Tuesday, March 18, 2025 at his residence.
Born September 15, 1946 in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of the late Howard Archie Merricks, Sr. and Helen Alice Bailess Merricks. He was predeceased by a sister, Dale Wright.
After graduation from Gretna High School, Tommy was drafted into the United States Army, serving with a Military Police unit, stationed within South Korea. During that period, his service allowed him to travel to other countries including Japan and Vietnam.
Tommy had a long career at Lane Furniture Company in Altavista, retiring after 32 years of service. He owned and operated an independent company, Tommy's Electric Motor Service, where he worked for over 40 years until his retirement in the fall of 2024. He was the 'Motor Man' for the region, assisting small farmers and businesses to towns and companies.
Tommy enjoyed traveling, going on cruises, watching gameshows, sporting events, and spending time and cheering on his grandchildren at their sporting events.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Dianne Merricks of the residence; one daughter, Tracey Merricks of Gretna; two sons, Jason Merricks and wife, Kelly of Midlothian and Chad Merricks of Gretna; one brother, H.A. Merricks, Jr. and wife, Mary Lou of Hurt; one sister, Nancy Merricks and husband, Aaron Johnson of Gretna; and three grandchildren, Abigail, Mary and Andrew.
Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Saturday, March 22, 2025 at Colbert-Moran Chapel by Rev. Lynn Marstin. Burial with Military Honors will follow in Carl O. Moran Memorial Garden.
The family will receive friends from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday, March 21, 2025 at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home and other times will be at the residence.
