Gretna…….Edward "Ed" Harvey Smoot, age 92 of Gretna passed away on  Tuesday, March 31, 2026 at Bedford Memorial Hospital, Bedford, VA.

Ed was born on October 6, 1933, in Granite, Maryland to Edward Franklin Smoot and Virginia Elizabeth Sealock. He grew up in this little Baltimore County community renowned for its granite quarries that quarried the granite used to build many of the buildings in Washington D.C. and for the home of the historic Woodstock Jesuit College.  In addition to his parents he was predeceased by his eight siblings, Elzie Lee Smoot, Virginia Elizabeth Smoot, Alice Madeline Smoot, Phylis Iris Smoot, Agnes May Smoot, Ross Herbert Smoot, Garrett R. Smoot, and Jackie Smoot.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy "Dee Dee" Dorsey Raiford Smoot; his sons Robert Smoot Troutman, and Michael Smoot; his stepdaughter, Dianna Raiford Andersen; his grandsons, Zachary and Tyler Andersen; his nephew, Marvin Smoot; and nieces, Gail Sassi Conaway, and Phylis Sassi Pierpont.

Ed graduated in 1953 from Milford Mill High School in Baltimore County, Maryland. Because of his age he was eligible for the draft and would have been sent right away to fight in the Korean Conflict. But because of his good grades in school, he was given the choice of staying in school and graduating with his class which he chose. By the time he was sent to Korea the fighting had ended and he ended up working in refrigeration repair. He came home from Korea and immediately went to work with the Baltimore County Fire Department where he served for 20 years retiring as a Lieutenant in July of 1976. During his time in the fire department, he also worked with Pete Garriott building houses

He loved hunting with his German Shorthaired Pointer, Pepper and belonged to the Hitching Post Hunt Club on the eastern shore of Maryland. He became an expert at using his own voice to call in different birds, turkeys especially. He also loved to go fishing, and riding his motorcycle. Another one of his loves was listening to bluegrass music and going to bluegrass concerts.

He joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in December of 1980. Whenever he had a spare minute he would spend it working with the local young missionaries and he never tired in his service with them and for them. Ever since he and his wife moved to the Gretna area they have fed the local missionaries at their home every Friday evening. Each one of them held a special place in his heart. On July 22, 1989, Ed & Dee Dee were married in the Washington D.C. temple for time and all eternity. What a blessing that was for the two of them. They served a senior mission together in the lowa Des Moines Mission where eternal friendships were made and where the restored gospel was taught to those who would listen. He had a strong testimony of the restored gospel and of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Ed and Dee Dee moved to the Gretna area in March 1992 where they bought property and built their home.  Ed made many friends and enjoyed working with them in the hay field, building various things, repairing equipment, etc. During some hay seasons he would spend all of his time repairing equipment instead of being in the field. One of his greatest delights for the past many years was going to the Blair's Service Station, aka "The Liar's Club" where the old men in the neighborhood would gather every morning and sit and talk and solve the problems of the world. Many deep friendships were made around that wooden table. He would leave at 6:30 every morning to go down to "the Club" and very rarely missed a weekday.

Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, April 7, 2026 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints Gretna Branch by President John Ansted.  Burial will be conducted at a later date at Crest Lawn Memorial Gardens in Marriottsville, MD.

The family will receive friends from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday, April 6, 2026 at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home and other times will be at the residence.
