Gretna……… Dorothy Smith Toney, age 86 of Gretna died Saturday, March 5, 2022 at her residence.

Born October 4, 1935 in Shawsville, she was a daughter of the late Clempsey Perdue and Roxie Perdue.  She was predeceased by one daughter, Sue Ferris; one step-son, Virgial Toney; one granddaughter, Carla Schontag; one sister, Sue Alls; and one brother, J.R. Alls.

"Dot" was a manager of Lendy's chain of restaurants and later was the owner of Dot and Toney's Restaurants, two were located in downtown Roanoke on Campbell Avenue, and Grandin Road and Fifth Street.  She loved the restaurant business and worked very hard at all of her businesses.  She had many stories to tell from all of these ventures of funny things that had happened and of characters who had worked and dined at her establishments.  She had a wit and was an encyclopedia of jokes and would pass them on to customers and others.  She was a lover of animals and had many over the years. She would carry food in her vehicle upon the chance that there was a hungry animal along the way to feed.  She never wanted to see anyone hungry and would prepare food for employees, renters, elderly or anyone that she knew was in need to take home at holiday time so that they would have a proper meal.  She also made many great meals to enjoy for holidays and summer fun at the lake, which included family, friends, hunters and neighbors.  Everyone was welcome.  She and Woodson also provided residence at times for people in need of temporary housing.  In her house, there was the old joke that it was his, hers, ours, and theirs that resided there.

She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Woodson Toney of the residence who lovingly and tirelessly took care of her during many years of health issues; one daughter, Lendy Prillaman (Eric Holder) of Rocky Mount; two sons, Max Owens of Moneta, and Sammy Toney and wife, Martha of Roanoke; one step-son, Mike Dearing and wife, Ina of Roanoke; five grandchildren, Forrest Prillaman and wife, Autume, Owen Prillaman and Liz Cormier, Ruth Ann Toney, Logan Toney, and Nicholas Toney; and one great-granddaughter, Claire Prillaman.

Graveside services will be conducted 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 8, 2022 at Carl O. Moran Memorial Garden by Lee Ashley, Minister.

The family would like to thank caregiver, Brenda Farmer who so lovingly took care of Mrs. Toney's needs.
