Hurt……Doris Jean Chumley "Tootsie" Atkinson, age 92 of Hurt died Tuesday, March 22, 2022 in Dobson, NC.

Born September 7, 1929 in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of the late Clifford Carroll Chumley and Laura Wooldridge Chumley.  She was predeceased by her husband, Garland Lee "Bud" Atkinson; one son, Michael Wayne Atkinson; two brothers, Billy Chumley, and Carl Chumley; and three sisters, Penny Chumley, Barbara Hall, and "Teenie" Bradner.  Mrs. Atkinson was a member of New Prospect Baptist Church and she was the owner/operator of Tootsie's Beauty Shop.  She enjoyed gardening, flowers, cooking, taking care of others, and volunteering at New Prospect Baptist Church.

She is survived by one daughter, Jeanne Pickerel and husband, David of Cashiers, NC; two brothers, Ronnie Chumley of Hurt, and Ralph Chumley of Vinton; five sisters, Lena Bennett and husband, Kermit of Hurt, Shirley Bailess of Hurt, Kathryn Dodson of Danville, Susan Crews of Hurt, and Chris Franklin and Billy Brewer of Hurt; a daughter-in-law, Brenda Michaels of Altavista; three grandchildren, Brian Atkinson and wife, Jenn of Richmond, Brandon Atkinson and wife, Jennie of Richmond, and Ashley Pickerel Thomas and husband, A.J. of Charlotte, NC; and five great-grandchildren, Cooper Atkinson, Cohen Atkinson, Calden Atkinson, Vivianne Atkinson, and Lillian Atkinson.

Graveside services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Friday, March 25, 2022 at the Chumley Family Cemetery by Rev. Brady Willis.
