Obituary

Gretna……Doris Fischer Rowland, age 81 of Gretna died Friday, August 1, 2014 as the result of an automobile accident.
Born June 8, 1933 in Heilbronn, West Germany she was a daughter of the late Richard Fischer and Emilie Sprecher Fischer. She met a tall handsome American soldier, and as the story goes, fell in love and got married to her late husband, Thurman Rowland. Following Thurman's military career they built their home in Gretna, Virginia and Doris proceeded to involve herself with a life in rural America. Often referred to as "That German Girl", Doris was an example of an American Citizen that made us all proud. Doris volunteered at Vacation Bible School and PTA and supported the Women's Auxiliary of the Disabled American Veterans. Doris loved her life and her family. She was strong and competent. One could always depend on her. Doris would also take no guff. Doris loved to fish and has brought home trophy size fish, one of which is on display in the home. She retired from Pannill Knitting and attended First Southern Baptist Church.
She is survived by two sons, Randy E. Rowland and his wife, Terri of Gretna and Richard T. Rowland and his wife, April of Gretna; three daughters, Ulrike "Ricki" Mattox and her husband, R.L., Jr. of Hurt, Barbara Nichols and her husband, John of Seabrook, TX, and Betty Rowland of Cottondale, AL; five grandchildren, Kole Mihalick, Christmas Joye Abbott, Christopher Thurman Abbott, R.L. Mattox III, and Summer Mckenna Rowland; two great-grandchildren, Chase Mihalick and Autumn Mihalick; and a special friend, Louise Towler of Gretna.
