Gretna……….Doris Ann Mattox Hamlet, age 93 of Gretna and Hurt passed away Sunday, January 11, 2026 in Roanoke.

Born October 9, 1932 in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of the late Ernest Carson Mattox, Sr. and Virgie Farmer Mattox.  She was predeceased by her husband of 72 years, Irvin Hamlet; five brothers, Carson Mattox, Pete Mattox, Herbert Mattox, Dude Mattox and Dickie Mattox; and a sister, Hazel Ingram Seawell.  Mrs. Hamlet was a follower of Jesus and a member of New Prospect Baptist Church.

She took great pride in being a successful homemaker and mom. She supported Irvin through college and his career and supported her children in their endless endeavors. She was everyone's favorite. She had a great sense of humor, made friends easily, and was a sweet friend to all who knew her.  She had a cool, classic style to the very end and was simply elegant in a pair of jeans.

She and Irvin started their family in Newport News, where she loved playing bridge and shopping with friends, while always being available to help as room mom or to go on field trips or to sit at the kitchen table and talk to her kids. The beach was her happy place, and she looked forward to annual family trips to Myrtle Beach and later Emerald Isle and Topsail Island.

After living in Williamsburg for 20 years, she wanted to come home to be closer to family, and they built a home in Gretna. Family was so important to her, and she was fiercely loyal to all of them. She believed in God's promise of eternal life for those who believe in His son Jesus, and she is now in her eternal home with Him and all her family who have gone on before.

She is survived by one daughter, Ellen Hamlet Womble and husband, Andrew of Hampstead, NC; one son, Irvin "Lee" Hamlet, Jr. and wife, Valerie of Roanoke, VA; two sisters, Judy Walker of Moneta, and Nancy Tucker and husband, Raymond of Lynch Station. She was also beloved "MeMe" to five grandchildren: Sam Deyerle and wife Shani of Richmond VA, Rachel Deyerle of Brooklyn NY, Josh Hamlet of Brooklyn NY, Tyler Hamlet of Roanoke VA, and Sophia Hamlet of Roanoke VA.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, January 22, 2026 at New Prospect Baptist Church Family Life Center by Rev. Brady Willis.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends following the service in the Family Life Center.
