Chatham……….Dorian Eldren Barker, age 86 of Chatham passed from this life Saturday, June 24, 2017 at Gretna Health and Rehab Center.
Born November 5, 1930 in the Moses Mill miller's house on Cherrystone Creek, just outside of Chatham, he was a son of the late John Henry Barker, Sr. and Elizabeth Booth Barker. He was predeceased by his wife, Sarah Keen Barker and one brother, John Henry Barker, Jr. Mr. Barker was a retired farmer and foreman of Ennis Business Forms. Mr. Barker was a proud veteran of the Korean Conflict, serving from 1952-1953 in the 7th Division 17th Infantry King Company. He was a Sergeant/Squad Leader in the 4th Platoon. He survived both battles of Pork Chop Hill, April and July 1953, despite sustaining wounds on three occasions. He earned a Purple Heart and carried battle scars all his days. Mr. Barker enjoyed blue grass music, driving around to see "the country" and farming land that has been in the family for over a century.
He is survived by one son, Stephen Barker and his wife, Cyndi of Chatham; and one daughter, Deborah Barker.
Graveside services with Military Honors by American Legion Altavista Post 36 and Gretna Post 232 will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 27, 2017 at Carl O. Moran Memorial Garden by Rev. Curtis English.
The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 8:30 P.M. Monday, June 26, 2017 at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home and other times at the residence of his son and daughter-in-law Stephen and Cyndi Barker, 6087 Callands Road, Chatham.
The family would like to thank the staff at Gretna Health and Rehab Center for caring for and about Mr. Barker, not just as a patient but as a person.
