Hurt……….Derek Gaylord Harvey, age 76 of 3948 Scott Jacobs Memorial Drive, Hurt peacefully passed away Wednesday, October 7, 2015 at his residence after a three year battle with cancer.
Born September 11, 1939 in Charlottesville he was a son to the late Julian Pierce Harvey and Myra Cash Harvey Massie. Mr. Harvey was a member of Thomas Road Baptist Church and was a former employee of Babcock and Wilcox and served in the Army National Guard in Fort Jackson, SC. He taught Sunday School and served as the Superintendent at Spring Road Baptist Church. He enjoyed hunting, farming, traveling, and one of his greatest joys was his grandchildren.
Mr. Harvey had an extensive career in the Free Masons. He was initiated an Entered Apprentice in March 1971, passed to the degree of Fellowcraft in June 1971 and raised to the sublime degree of Master Mason in July 1971. He was a member of Lowesville Lodge 293 A.F. & A.M. and Fleetwood Harmony Lodge 92 A.F. & A.M. and Campbell Lodge 316 A.F. & A.M. serving as Worshipful Master in 1976, 1980, 1989 and 1993. He also served as District Deputy Grand Master for the 21st Masonic District in 1978. Mr. Harvey served as a Trustee for Campbell Lodge 316 A.F. & A.M. for many years.
Those left to cherish his memories are his wife, Ella Keatts Harvey of the residence; two daughters, Pam Howell and her husband, Tom of Evington and Annette Powell and her husband, Reggie of Lynchburg; three sons, Brian Harvey and his wife, Suzanne of Medina, OH, Howard Harvey and his wife, Bronwyen of Lynchburg and Steve Harvey and his wife, Barbara of Lynchburg; two brothers; Neal Harvey and his wife, Rita of Madison Heights and Ted Harvey and his wife, Carolyn of Madison Heights; and ten grandchildren, Alayna, Ashton, Caitlin, Mackenzie, Lucas, Carrington, Elizabeth Grace, Hope, Jim and Chelsea.
Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 P.M. Monday, October 12, 2015 at Colbert-Moran Chapel by Pastor Dave Heerspink and Rev. John Campbell. Burial with Masonic Rites by Campbell Lodge 316 A.F. & A.M. will follow in Altavista Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
The family would like to give a special thanks to Dr. John MacNeill and the staff at Lynchburg Oncology, the staff at Centra Hospice and the caregivers at Generations Solutions.
In lieu of flowers the family suggest memorials be made to the American Cancer Society.
