David Edward Worley, age 66, of Gretna passed away peacefully at his home Saturday, May 18, 2024.

He was born in Pittsylvania County, April 23, 1958, the son of the late Harold Edward Worley and Sallie Pearson Worley. Raised on a tobacco farm, David graduated from Gretna High School in 1976 and received an Associate Degree in Education from Danville Community College. David holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Agriculture Education from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, graduating cum laude in 1989. He was a member of the Ag Education Society and Alpha Tau Alpha, the Agricultural Education honor society.

He retired from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and Rural Development in October 2022 as area director after 36 years of service. He received a special plaque from the U. S. Department of Agriculture for outstanding contributions and service as a federal employee.

David is survived by his wife of 34 years, Kathy Short Worley of the residence; two sons Matthew David Worley and wife, Amanda of Chatham and Joseph Edward Worley of Alexandria; his mother-in-law, Betty Short of Gretna; one brother Wayne Ramsey Worley (LaVerne) of Chatham; three sisters Patsy Worley Pickral, Susan Worley, and Sandy Worley Simpson (Troy) all of Chatham; and beloved nieces, nephews and extended family. He was preceded in death by his brother Jerry Thomas Worley.

David served as a deacon and Sunday school teacher at Midway Baptist Church in Gretna. He loved working with Operation Christmas Child and Midway youth group missions. David loved hunting, traveling, and admiring God's creation. He lived with grace, dignity, and love for his family.

Funeral services are scheduled 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 21, 2024 at Midway Baptist Church by Rev. Lynn Marstin. Burial will follow in the Carl O. Moran Memorial Garden. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 21, 2024 in the church sanctuary and at other times at the family home on Windy Road in Gretna.

Per David's wishes, consideration of memorial gifts can be sent to the Claire Parker Foundation or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
