Durham, NC……….Charles Jackson Franks, age 87 of Durham, NC formerly of Gretna died Sunday, June 8, 2014 in Duke University Hospital, Durham, NC.
Born December 12, 1926 in Smithfield, Pennsylvania he was a son of the late Arthur Clinton Franks and Nellie Goodwin Franks. He was predeceased by his wife, Phyllis Layne Franks. He earned his undergraduate degree from West Virginia University, his Masters in Agricultural Education from Virginia Tech and his Masters of Education Administration from the University of Virginia. Mr. Franks spent 42 years in the Pittsylvania County School system, serving as a teacher, principal and retiring as Supervisor of Vocational Education. Following his retirement he was very active in the Northern Pittsylvania County Food Bank. He enjoyed working in his garden, wood working and was a member of Anderson Memorial United Methodist Church. Mr. Franks was an Army veteran of World War II.
He is survived by four sons, John Franks and wife, Jan of Summerville, SC, Barry Franks and wife, Melissa of Vienna, Tom Franks of Middletown, RI, and Dan Franks and wife, Julie of Durham, NC; one brother, Jim Franks and wife Donna of Smithfield, PA; eight grandchildren, Tony Franks and wife, Danica Lance, April Christopher and husband, Josh, Rachel Franks, Charlie Franks, Hannah Franks, Brian Kinsella, Rory Franks, and Amanda Piper and husband, Brandon; three step-grandchildren, Eddie Mitchell, Scott Mitchell and Joe Mitchell; two great-grandchildren, Tillman Christopher and Carter Christopher.
Graveside services will be conducted 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, June 11, 2014 at Fort Hill Memorial Park by Rev. Roy Parker.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 10, 2014 at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home.
