Gretna…..Carroll Simpson, age 86 of 192 Simpson Lane, Gretna died Monday, October 15, 2012 at Lynchburg General Hospital.
Born December 5, 1925 in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of the late Moman William Simpson and Sagasta Keesee Simpson. He was predeceased by two sons, Mark Carroll Simpson, and Kenneth Martin Simpson; and three brothers, Roscoe Simpson, Lacy Simpson, Sr., and Gerald Simpson. He was a member of St. Victoria Catholic Church and was a retired Command Sergeant Major in the United States Army having served 26 years. Mr. Simpson was a Navy Veteran of World War II, and an Army Veteran of the Korean Conflict and Vietnam Conflict. He enjoyed woodworking having built the Altar and Sanctuary pieces including the baptismal font at St. Victoria Catholic Church. Mr. Simpson was also an artist, and poet. He also enjoyed hunting, and fishing.
He is survived by his wife, of 65 years, Ruth Van DeVyvere Simpson of the residence; three sons, Steve Simpson and his wife, Nancy of Hickory, NC, Jeff Simpson of Gretna, and Chris Simpson and his wife, Suellen of Lebanon, TN; two daughters, Carolyn Baker and her husband, Clark of Houston, TX, and Dianna Lavoie and her husband, Allan of Gretna; one sister, Elaine Worley of Roanoke; 20 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
A Mass of the Resurrection will be conducted 11:00 A.M. Thursday, October 18, 2012 at St. Victoria Catholic Church, Hurt, VA by Father Jim Gallagher. Burial with Military Honors by the Fort Lee Honor Guard will follow in Gretna Burial Park.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 P.M. Wednesday, October 17, 2012 at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home and other times will be at the residence.
