Gretna……Carroll Hugh Farmer, age 90 of Gretna died Thursday, December 15, 2022 at Heritage Green Daybreak in Lynchburg, Virginia

Born May 22, 1932 in Gretna, Virginia, he was a son of the late Hugh Hyron Farmer and Ruby Yeatts Farmer.  In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a brother-in-law, James Atkins; and a sister-in-law, Edna B. Ferguson.

Mr. Farmer graduated from Gretna High School in 1949.  He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1951 to 1955 and was a member of the American Legion Gretna Post 232 for 51 years.  He was a member of Piney Fork Baptist Church where he served as Trustee for many years.  He retired from the United States Postal Service where he was fondly known by many as "the mailman."

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Peggy Barber Farmer; three daughters, Cynthia Davidson and husband, Doug of Statesville, NC, Martha Adkins and husband, Mike of Gretna, and Janet Hancock and husband, Ricky of Gretna.  He was affectionately known as "PA" to three grandchildren, Daniel Ruff and Kristi Irby of Gretna, Jay Ruff and wife, Allie of Willis, and Mary Morrisette and husband, Rob of Lynchburg; four great-grandchildren, Zachary Ruff, Jordan Ruff, Kate Morrisette and Levi Morrisette; one sister, Peggy Farmer Atkins of Leesburg, GA; one brother, Benjamin Farmer of Gretna; a brother-in-law, Elwood Barber and wife, Linda of Chatham; and a special niece, Ellen Atkins Smith who affectionately called him "Petesie."

Funeral services will be conducted at 4:00 p.m. Sunday, December 18, 2022 at Colbert-Moran Chapel by Rev. Bob Ballance.  Burial with Military Honors by American Legion Altavista Post 36 and Gretna Post 232 will follow in Carl O. Moran Memorial Garden.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 3 to 4:00 p.m. Sunday, December 18, 2022 at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home.
