Obituary

Hurt…..Carrie Mae Farris, age 97 of Hurt died Monday, December 22, 2014 at Autumn Care Nursing and Rehab Center.
Born October 29, 1917 in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of the late Coleman A. Irby and Lucy Yeatts Irby. She was predeceased by her husband, Samuel David Farris, Sr.; three sons, Kenneth Farris, Donny Farris, and Calvin Farris; six brothers, Dan Irby, Jessie Irby, George Irby, Vance Irby, David Irby, and Herman Irby; two sisters, Ella Frances Irby and Nera Worley; and two grandchildren, Jared Farris and Terry Farris. Mrs. Farris was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints Gretna Branch and served as Sunday School Secretary for many years. She was a home maker; and she enjoyed sharing flowers and vegetables from her garden, and quilting and sewing.
She is survived by four sons, Ryland T. Farris of Hurt, Sam Farris, Jr. and his wife, Frances of Hurt, Ted L. Farris and his wife, Judy of Draper, UT, and Roy A. Farris of Smyrna, TN; seven daughters, Betty Dodds and her husband, Lloyd of Upland, CA, Carolyn Hall and her husband, John of Hurt, Lucy Smith and her husband, James of Glendora, CA, Mary Pugh and her husband, Grady of Gretna, Lois Wheeler and her husband, Wayne of Hurt, Peggy Harward and her husband, Calvin of Mapleton, UT, and Judy Ball of Clinton, UT; two brothers, Fitzhugh (Pete) Irby of Hurt and Curtis Irby of Newport News; five sisters, Viola Fulcher of Lynchburg, Estelle Simpson of Lynchburg, Eleanor Haynes of Darlington, SC, Drucilla Purdue, and Dale Shelton of Lynchburg; 32 grandchildren, 38 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, December 24, 2014 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Gretna Branch by President Raymond Elliott. Burial will follow in the Farris Family Cemetery.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 10 to 11 A.M. Wednesday, December 24, 2014 at the church and other times will be at the residence of her daughter and son-in-law, Lois and Wayne Wheeler, 1808 Izaak Walton Rd, Hurt.
