Obituary

Gretna…….Carolyn Cocke Hines died peacefully on November 15, 2018. Carolyn was born on July 3, 1927 to her late parents, Peatross G. Cocke and Ruth Bryant Cocke at their farm near Gretna, VA.

Growing up with her siblings working hard on a tobacco farm and becoming self-sufficient were principles that were instilled by her parents. In 1946, Carolyn's family received the distinguished honor of being named Master Farm Family by the Progressive Farmer Magazine and VA Tech Agriculture Extension Service.

Carolyn graduated from Gretna High School in 1945. WWII progressed the entirety of her high school career. Carolyn, along with her classmates, invited the Governor of Virginia at that time, Colgate Darden, to speak at their commencement. It was a proud and fulfilling moment for the Class of 1945.

Carolyn attended Averett College for business and most of her working career was helping families in Pittsylvania County as a loan officer at Farmers Home Administration.

Carolyn followed her mother in music appreciation by singing in choir and playing piano at Anderson Memorial Methodist Church in Gretna for over 25 years.

Carolyn was a dedicated mother to her three surviving children, Laura Hines Surber, Lawrence T Hines, Jr. (Janice) and William B. Hines (Sherry). In addition to her children, she is survived by a brother, Billy W. Cocke and a sister, Lucy C. Simpson. Her brothers, Hoyt Cocke and Delano Cocke preceded her in death. She also leaves to cherish her memory, 4 grandchildren, Rachel Turman Bowler (Andrew), Katie Hines, Matthew Hines (Paige) and Emily Bussell (Patrick) and 4 great-grandchildren, Seiya, Sena, & Lyukai Nomura and Haylee Hines.

The family would like to thank James Warner, MD and Centra Hospice for their help and support. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Carolyn's memory to Anderson Memorial Methodist Church, Gretna, VA.
