Gretna…..Bishop Gilbert Woodson Dunbar, Sr., age 92 went home to Glory on Thursday, July 17, 2014, after a short illness.
Born January 17, 1922 in Botetourt County he was a son of the late Thomas Minor Dunbar and Lena Bell Niday Dunbar. He was precededed in death by his wife, of over 65 years, Mary Dudley Dunbar. Bishop Dunbar served as a Church of God of Prophecy Minister for over 60 years. He was an Army veteran of World War II. Mr. Dunbar was a member of the 460th Amphibian Truck Company from Dec. 1943 to Aug. 1945. He received a Bronze Star at Omaha Beach and a second at the Battle of the Hedges. He was an avid baseball fan and especially enjoyed following the New York Yankees.
He is survived by two sons, Gilbert W. Dunbar, Jr. and wife, Stacy of Gretna, and James Dudley Dunbar and wife, Martha of Rutherfordton, NC; four grandchildren, Amy Dunbar, T.J. Dunbar, Nikkie Burgo and Casey Dunbar; six great-grandchildren, Chentile Goodman, Danielle Duggar, Skyy Duggar, Gwendlyn Capps, Avery Capps and Skylar Burgo; one great-great-grandchild, Landyn.
Funeral services will be conducted 1:00 P.M. Monday, July 21, 2014 at the Java Church of God of Prophecy by Rev. Gary Vernon, Rev. Jack Crain and Rev. Edward Pope. Burial with military honors by the Virginia National Guard Honor Guard will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, July 20, 2014 at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home and other times will be at the residence, 500 East Gretna Road, Gretna.
