Obituary

Altavista……….James William "Billy" Hill went home to Heaven and joined his Beloved Granddaddy on November 30,2018.

He was born in South Carolina to Ansel and Martha Hill on February 8, 1946, and predeceased by an infant sister. He is survived by his high school sweetheart and wife of 52 years, Connie. A son and wife he considered a daughter; James Michael (Mike) Hill and Kim. A granddaughter and her husband whom he loved dearly and was so proud of; Megan and Trevor Robertson. Two great-granddaughters he adored; Kassidy and Ryleigh Grace. A devoted niece, Vicky Martin. His wife's family that became his family: sisters and brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews. Mike's "Older Brother" Andy West, and his adopted sons: Ben Jones, Rick Bodenheimer, Gen. Paul Griffin (Ret.), Jeff Lewis, and Nick Hansen. As well as numerous close friends he held dear in his heart.

Billy graduated from Altavista High School and loved his days playing baseball and football. Complimented by teammates "as the best Center Altavista ever had.". Billy was a master electrician completing Electrical Technical School a year early with full accreditation. After many years as a foreman on many commercial construction jobs: including Ross/Abbott Labs, Meredith Burda, and Proctor-Gamble he took his expertise to the Federal Aviation Administration. He began his career as an Environmental Technician and was quickly recognized for his extensive knowledge of electricity and talent for accomplishing impossible tasks. After 10 years he was promoted to Technical Support Operations, and became the go-to-guy in the Eastern Service Area. In his 23 years of service to the U.S. Government he was recognized for his integrity, instruction and encouragement to peers, and excellent performance of his duties. He was a proud member of Lynch Station Baptist Church and served there in many capacities, Youth leader to two generations including many mission trips to help those in need, Sunday School teacher, and Elevator repairman. He always believed that all a kid needed was love and understanding. Coaching Mike in baseball as a youth and playing golf later was the joy of his life. He, Mike, and Andy built the batteau Will Clark in his backyard for the James River Batteau Festival which he looked forward to every year. He loved all things outdoors except yard work. His integrity was well known and one either liked Ole Billy or not, a great friend said the other day, "you always knew where you stood with Billy". He loved his God, his family and friends. Rest well, your race is run and was well done.
