Gretna…….William Holmes "Bill" Fowle, Jr., age 84 of Gretna died Tuesday, February 20, 2024 at Centra Lynchburg General Hospital.

Born November 5, 1939 in the Shenandoah Valley, he was a son of the late William Holmes Fowle, Sr. and Louise Harris Fowle.  He was predeceased by a brother, Sam Fowle; and a sister, Mary White.  Mr. Fowle was a U.S. Army, and a retired Lieutenant Colonel with the Army National Guard.  He was a Virginia State Trooper with the Virginia State Police for thirty years.  After retiring from the Virginia State Police, he worked several years with the Pittsylvania County Sheriff's Department.  He enjoyed field trials.

He is survived by his wife, Swan Taylor Fowle of the residence; one daughter, Jennifer Hawkins of South Carolina; two grandchildren, Carter Bailey Ernest, and Mattie Leigh Hawkins; his mother-in-law, Delores Taylor; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Saturday, March 9, 2024 at Zion Chapel by Dr. David Wheeler, and Pastor Ronnie Simpson.  Interment of ashes with Military Honors by American Legion Altavista Post 36 and Gretna Post 232 will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 1 to 2:00 p.m. Saturday, March 9, 2024 at Zion Chapel.
