Betty Fielder Short of Gretna VA, age 92, had her heavenly home going on July 20, 2025 at Gretna Health and Rehab.

She was born in Franklin County VA on July 6, 1933, the daughter of Harry and Alice Hammock Fielder. Raised in a hardworking share-cropping family, she was one of 12 children: 9 boys and 3 girls. She is survived by one brother, David Fielder (Sue) of Antioch, Illinois. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her brothers William, Jimmy, Bryant, Everett, Herbert "Tootie", Edward Earl, Homer, and Wayne, and sisters Sarah Crews and Pearl Crews.

Betty learned to cook by watching her mother and baked her first biscuits in a wood stove at age seven. She loved learning but chose to quit formal education to care for her youngest brother, Wayne, who was diagnosed with polio.

Her past work experience included weaving at Dan River Mills in Danville VA and sewing at Bassett Walker in Chatham VA. Betty and her husband Max farmed for 15 years while living in Sandy Level, VA.  She also served as cook at local restaurants and at Gretna Health Care before retiring to care for her husband of 38 years. She was predeceased by her husband and best friend, Max Short in 2000.

Betty was an avid gardener. She loved canning and freezing produce and making jellies and jams. She enjoyed sewing until her eyesight no longer allowed her to do so. She was a wonderful cook and found joy in preparing "feasts" for family gatherings. Betty enjoyed watching baseball games, listening to Blue Grass music and flat-foot dancing when her health allowed. She was a member of Gretna First Baptist Church and had a personal relationship with God. Her love for God and family and her hard work ethic will be remembered as part of the legacy she taught our family.

Betty's family meant everything to her. She is survived by 3 children: son, Billy Gregory Worsham of Danville, VA; son, Kenneth Worsham (Marilyn) of Gretna VA; daughter, Kathy Short Worley of Gretna VA and 3 stepchildren: son, Bobby Short (Sandra) of Danville VA; daughter, Maxine Short Tolley of San Antonio TX; and daughter, Susie Short Sizemore of Danville VA. She was predeceased by a stepson, Glenn Short of Danville, VA. She was the proud grandma of 15: Angela (Jason) Pendry, Michael (Cat) Worsham, Jessica Worsham (Matt), Christopher (Katie) Worsham, Kevin (Brandie) Worsham, Matthew (Amanda) Worley, Joey Worley, Wendy Short, Jeff (Angela) Short, Tayron Cutler, Richard Tolley, Lisa Tolley, Sam (Kathy) Short, Tony Short, Charlie Short, and Roger Williams. She was also blessed with 21 great-grandchildren, 5 great-great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

The children wish to thank the many caregivers for the kindness shown to our mother. We mostly thank our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ for being our source of strength, refuge and forgiveness in this life journey. Heaven awaits all who accept God's gift of eternal life.

Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Saturday, July 26, 2025 at the First Baptist Church of Gretna by Rev. Jason Andrews.  Burial will follow in Gretna Burial Park.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Saturday, July 26, 2025 at the First Baptist Church of Gretna and other times will be at the residence of her daughter, Kathy Worley.
