Gretna……….Bessie Irby Simpson, age 87 of 2381 Sycamore Road, Gretna, died Monday, April 4, 2011 at the residence of her granddaughter in Hurt.
Born November 27, 1923 in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of the late Luther Irby, and Annie Dalton Irby. She was predeceased by her husband Caril Douglas Simpson; three brothers, Eugene Irby, William Irby, Sr., and Calvin Irby, Sr.; and two sisters, Beatrice Vedder, and Sara DeJarnette. Mrs. Simpson was a member of Midway Baptist Church, and was a home maker. She enjoyed flowers, gardening, canning, and hog killing time.
She is survived by a son, Russell H. Simpson of Gretna; four sisters, Katie Keatts of Gretna, Kathleen Dalton of Gretna, Louella Robertson of Hurt, and Dottie Francis of Altavista; a granddaughter, Gail Simpson Strickland of Hurt; two grandsons, Ray A. Simpson of Hurt, and Douglas H. Simpson of Gretna; five great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, April 6, 2011 at Colbert-Moran Chapel by Marvin Oakes. Burial will follow in the Simpson Family Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 P.M. Tuesday, April 5, 2011 at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home and other times will be at her residence, 2381 Sycamore Road, Gretna.
