Gretna…..Benny Washington Irby, age 59 of Gretna, died Saturday, September 17, 2011 at Lynchburg General Hospital.
Born April 18, 1952 in Campbell County, he was a son of the late George Washington Irby and Thelma Lorraine Shelton Irby. He was predeceased by a brother, Robert Irby, and a sister, Alease Irby. Benny was an artist and of the Baptist faith. He enjoyed bird watching, fishing, gardening, carpentering, and walking.
He is survived by his two sons, Jason Irby and wife, Cindy of Rustburg, and Jamie Irby and wife, April of Rustburg; one brother, Barney Irby and wife, Janice of Cascade; four sisters, Kitty C. Irby of Gretna, Linda Walden and husband, Eddie of Hurt, Wanda Worley and husband, Lee of Gretna, and Jewel Mattox and husband, Johnny of Hurt; nieces and nephews, Brian Walden, J.R. Mattox, Jacob Mattox, Christy Covington, Heather Irby, Carmen Irby, and Kayla Irby; special aunt, Ruby Shelton; great nieces and nephews, and his faithful dog Buddy.
Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 21, 2011 at the Colbert-Moran Chapel by Rev. George Knight. Burial will follow in Carl O. Moran Memorial Garden.
The family will receive friends at the residence of his sister and brother-in-law, Wanda and Lee Worley, 789 Mercury Road, Gretna.
