Gretna..…..Barbara Saunders Hancock, age 79 of Gretna died Wednesday, October 7, 2015 at Gretna Health and Rehabilation Center.
Born July 15, 1936 in Pittsylvania County she was a daughter of the late Herbert Thomas Saunders and Alice Margaret Davis Saunders. She was predeceased by her husband, the love of her life, Albert Bowler Hancock; a brother, John William Saunders; and a son-in-law, Dr. James Midkiff. Mrs. Hancock was an active member at Greenfield Baptist Church, where she served as the Sunday School Secretary and was a member of the W.M.U. She retired from Burlington Industries after more than 47 years.
Barbara was a selfless, kind-natured woman known for her generosity. She never forgot a birthday or holiday for her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She never met a stranger and earned the trust of all who knew her. Barbara had many visitors in her final days and she was deeply humbled by the community's care and concern. She will be missed and remembered by many.
She is survived by one daughter, Susan Midkiff of Roanoke; one brother, Thomas W. Saunders & Gladys of Gretna; two sisters, Beulah Dishman of Danville and Annie Marie Wilson & Woodrow of Gretna; four grandchildren, Jill D'Agostino & Joe, Dr. Tyler Midkiff & Angelia, Adam Midkiff & Andrea, and Jake Midkiff & Jacqueline; an aunt, Willie Hankins of Danville; and seven great-grandchildren, Tonino D'Agostino, Sandro D'Agostino, Sofia Midkiff, Amalia Midkiff, Tomas Midkiff, Noah Midkiff and Lucas Midkiff.
Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 A.M. Saturday, October 10, 2015 at Greenfield Baptist Church by Rev. R.G. Rowland. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
