Anderson Rowland
Hurt………Anderson Woodell Rowland, age 94 one of America's Greatest Generation, died peacefully on December 24, 2018, at his residence.
Anderson was born on September 16, 1924 to John William Rowland and Nannie Elizabeth Eanes Rowland in Pittsylvania County, Virginia. Anderson was preceded in death by his beloved son, Andy Keith Rowland; four brothers, Tom, Noel, Jip and Russell Rowland; three sisters, Christine Brooks, Florence Jennings, and Dorothy Woodson. He grew up on the family farm during the Great Depression and proudly served his country in the United States Navy during World War II. He was the former owner of Jips Diner and Motley Motors, enjoyed raising cattle on his farm, and always loved to dance.
Anderson is survived by his wife of 67 years, Jean Mitchell Rowland. He is also survived by his son, Gary Rowland (Robin) of Rustburg, and his daughter, Shelby Crist (Warren) of Lynchburg. Other family members include his grandchildren, Carrington Crawford (Joni), Dara Brown (Brandon), Holly Capps (Tom), and Tabitha Childress (Michael). He was also blessed with seven great-grandchildren. A sister, Elsie Myers (Junior) of Keysville and a special sister-in-law, Sue Blackstock of Altavista, also survive him.
Anderson lived life to the fullest and always extended a helping hand to those in need. In his remembrance, do something you enjoy each day and make a positive difference in someone else's life.
A graveside service with military honors by American Legion Altavista Post 36 and Gretna Post 232 will be conducted 1:00 p.m. Thursday, December 27, 2018 at the Carl O. Moran Memorial Garden by Rev. R.G. Rowland.
The family would like to express heartfelt gratitude to Betsy, Tinji, and devoted granddaughter, Tabitha, for the compassionate care given to Anderson during the past months. Thanks also to Centra Hospice and his favorite nurse, Michelle.
