Alice Katherine Barksdale Stephens, age 95 of Gretna passed away on Wednesday, February 2, 2022 at Gretna Health and Rehab Center, surrounded by her loving family.

Alice was born February 13, 1926 in the Greenfield Community of Pittsylvania County in the home of her grandparents and the home she lived in for most of her life.  She was a daughter of the late Edward Norman Barksdale and Carrie Vester Bullington Barksdale.  She was predeceased by her husband, Calvin Preston Stephens, Sr; two sisters, Hazel Warden and Mary Gunter; and four brothers, Clarence Barksdale, Harry Barksdale, Paul Barksdale and Fred Barksdale.  She was the last surviving member of her generation.

Alice graduated from Gretna High School and attended Averett College.  She and Calvin married on June 19, 1948 and spent 53 precious years together before his death.

Alice was a faithful member of Greenfield Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, Sunbeams, and GA's for many years.  She loved her church and she loved teaching children about Jesus.

She loved spending time with family and traveling.  She worked in her early married life at Herman's in Danville.  Then she was a homemaker and caregiver to many family members in her home over the years.  She made sure everyone was taken care of.

Alice is survived by two daughters, Katherine S. Carlton and husband, Michael of Roanoke, and Joan S. Turbyfill and husband, David of Danville; one son, Calvin P. Stephens, Jr. and wife, Susan of Danville; three grandchildren, Joshua Carlton and wife, Andrea of Cary, NC, Jennifer C. Roberson and husband, Clay of High Springs, FL, and Jeremy Stephens and wife, Corrina of Nashville, TN; six great-grandchildren, Dima, Eva, Krystina, Jack, Danya and Calvin Carlton all of Cary, NC; plus, several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Sunday, February 6, 2022 at Greenfield Baptist Church by Rev. R. G. Rowland and Rev. David Turbyfill.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 1 to 2:00 p.m. Sunday, February 6, 2022 at Greenfield Baptist Church and following the service in the church fellowship hall.
