Gretna…..Alice Wood Myers Pickerel, age 86 passed away peacefully Wednesday, August 21, 2013 at her home in Gretna, VA.
Born November 1, 1926 in Pittsylvania County she was the youngest of four daughters to the late Zebulon Vance Myers and Cleo Vella Howell Myers. Mrs. Pickerel was predeceased by her husband Samuel Vernon Pickerel, Sr.; and two sisters, Avis Burner and Alta Slayton. She was a member of Chatham Presbyterian Church. As a home maker, she always enjoyed family gatherings and spoiling the babies. Obviously, Christmas was her favorite time of the year. With a camping trailer in tow, Alice and Sam enjoyed their later years making many new friends traveling around the country. Alice will be fondly remembered by all her dear friends and loved ones. Mrs. Pickerel was an avid reader; and loved sewing, and being around family and friends.
She is survived by three sons, Samuel V. Pickerel, Jr. and his wife, Dixie of Lynchburg, John H. Pickerel of Cashiers, NC, and David M. Pickerel and his wife, Jeanne of Cashiers, NC; three daughters, Rebecca Dalton of Gretna, Mary Kathryn Pickerel of Richmond, and Nancy Woodward of Gretna; one sister, Joyce Miller; 9 grandchildren, Sandy Short and husband, Kyle, Barry Pickerel and wife, Julie, Jennifer Parker and husband, David, Brad Pickerel and wife, Kim, Ginger Woodward, John Dalton and wife, Anita, Craig Woodward III and wife, Holly, Sarah Bailey and husband, Russ, and Ashley Thomas and husband, AJ ; 13 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Graveside services will be conducted 2:00 P.M. Saturday, August 24, 2013 at Gretna Burial Park by Rev. Mikel Pugh.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 P.M. Friday, August 23, 2013 at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home.
