Agnes Rowland Johnson, wife of Bob Marshall Johnson, passed away on June 29, 2019 at Centra Lynchburg General Hospital after a lengthy battle with multiple illnesses.
Agnes was born October 19, 1933, the ninth child of John Carrington (Tack) Rowland, Sr. and Lottie Shelton Rowland. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by five brothers and three sisters: Frank Rowland, Sr., Thenie Rowland Smith, Perry Rowland, Delma Rowland Hershman, Lee Rowland, John C. Rowland, Jr., Willard Rowland, and Elvin Rowland Midkiff. She was also preceded in death by her second son, who was stillborn.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by her son, Jeffrey Scott Johnson, her daughter-in-law, Linda Marie Prather, her grandson, Blake Marshall Prather-Johnson, all of Vienna, Virginia, and many nieces and nephews.
Agnes grew up in the Gretna, Virginia area and was a graduate of Gretna High School (Class of 1950) and Phillips Business College in Lynchburg. Following graduation, she was employed as a secretary-bookkeeper for an automobile dealership in Gretna. Upon the birth of her son, Agnes became a stay-at-home mother and a volunteer in many capacities, particularly for the Danville Mental Health Association. Agnes was always an avid sports lady, particularly in softball, basketball, tennis, and golf, and she was very good at all of them. With the onset of arthritis, she transitioned to the role of an avid sports spectator for the rest of her life. Agnes grew up in Greenfield Baptist Church in Gretna, Virginia. Since moving to Lynchburg, she has been a member of Mountain View United Methodist Church in Forest, Virginia.
Graveside services will be conducted 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, July 2, 2019 at Greenfield Baptist Church Cemetery in Gretna, Virginia by Rev. R.G. Rowland.
Celebration of Life Services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 2, 2019 at Mountain View United Methodist Church in Forest, Virginia by Pastor Steve Propst.
The Celebration of Life Service will be followed by a reception in the church fellowship hall.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be given to The American Cancer Society, The American Heart Association, the Cemetery Maintenance Fund for Greenfield Baptist Church, Mountain View United Methodist Church, or to your favorite charity.
