Gretna…….Abner Herman Jacobs, age 82 of Gretna died Sunday, July 1, 2018 at Lynchburg General Hospital.

Born February 11, 1936 in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of the late Hugh Dillard Jacobs and Pearl Foster Jacobs.  He was also predeceased by his first wife, Loutricia Myers Jacobs; two brothers, Vernon Jacobs and Hugh Jacobs, Jr.; and one sister, Eunice Jacobus.  Mr. Jacobs was a member of Piney Fork Baptist Church where he served as Deacon, Sunday School Superintendent and Sunday School Teacher.  He retired from the Appalachian Power Company; and was former board member for the March of Dimes and a member of the March of Dimes Hall of Fame in Richmond.  Abner was an Army Veteran of Vietnam and a member of American Legion Gretna Post 232.  Mr. Jacobs enjoyed working on the farm, golfing, and helping neighbors.

He is survived by his wife, Madelene Williams Jacobs of the residence; two step-sons, Bernard Savarese of Ohio and Frank Savarese of Ohio; one step-daughter, Francine Davenport of Ohio; one brother, Lloyd Jacobs and wife, Annette of Altavista; two sisters, Shirley Karlen and husband, James of Salem and Nancye Ballew and husband, Bill of McDonough, GA; a sister-in-law, Carrie Jacobs of Gretna; a brother-in-law, Earl Jacobus of NJ; and seven step-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted 1:00 p.m. Thursday, July 5, 2018 at Piney Fork Baptist Church by Rev. Tyler R. Daniels.  Burial with military honors by American Legion Altavista Post 36 and Gretna Post 232 will follow in Gretna Burial Park.

The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, July 4, 2018 at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home and other times will be at the residence.
